Introduction to Standards of Practice, Guidelines, and Supporting Documents
The College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Manitoba (CASLPM) provides guidance to support professional practice, including expectations related to Standards of Practice, legislation, and College requirements. This authority is established under The Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA) and reflects the College’s responsibility to protect and serve the public.
Standards of Practice, guidelines, and supporting documents are developed to address specific practice questions and situations and may not be relevant in all circumstances. They are intended to support professional practice but do not replace professional judgement or legal advice. All guidance documents should be read and interpreted together with the Standards of Practice, RHPA, regulations, by-laws, and the CASLPM Code of Ethics.
Standards of Practice
The Standards of Practice set the minimum expectations for professional conduct and performance of audiologists and speech-language pathologists practising in Manitoba. They are intended to ensure that registrants meet their professional responsibilities to provide competent, safe, and ethical care.
All CASLPM registrants are required to comply with the Standards of Practice, regardless of role, area of practice, or practice setting. Registrants are responsible for understanding the Standards and applying them to their professional practice.
Responsibility refers to the duty to meet professional obligations.
Accountability means being able to explain and justify one’s decisions and actions in relation to the expectations.
Employer policies or workplace requirements do not replace a registrant’s professional obligations. Registrants remain accountable for their own practice and must not practice in a manner that is inconsistent with CASLPM Standards of Practice.
Guidelines
To support the Standards of Practice, the CASLPM Council approves guidelines that offer additional direction on applying the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA), CASLPM Regulations, and other requirements related to professional practice.
Guidelines outline and describe expected behaviours and practices that promote safe, competent, and ethical care. They help clarify, expand upon, and interpret regulatory requirements for the professions of audiology and speech-language pathology.
Additional Supporting Documents
Additional supporting documents provide further clarity on how regulations and expectations are applied in practice. They promote transparency in processes and address topics that may not be fully covered by Standards of Practice or guidelines.
